Wash your car even in rainy weather.

May 8, 2022

Even if you don't have a ceramic coating on your car...

You still need to wash your car even when it's rainy. Why? Because you're exchanging the old dirt for new dirt on your paint, which has several benefits for you long-term.

First: By washing your car every couple weeks rain or shine, you're not allowing harmful contaminants to adhere to your paint and being they're slow but inevitable destruction of your beautiful paint.

Second: By washing your car every couple weeks rain or shine, you're staying on top of the light cleaning so that when you're due for your annual professional detail job, your detailer can spend more time with lighter cleaning and less aggressive polishing (paint correction), and you'll spend less money and have a more beautiful car, win win win!

Think of it like brushing your teeth... you brush your teeth every morning don't you? Even though you're just going to eat and get them dirty all day aren't you? You don't leave your teeth to degrade month-after-month until you're finally ready for your annual professional dental cleaning do you? Your car's paint is exactly the same! You don't get a cavity from eating one piece of candy, but eat candy for months upon months without brushing your teeth and what happens? Your car's paint is EXACTLY the same!

So... muster up the courage to wash your car regularly, even when it's raining. You'll love your car more, and you'll save money at your detailer's, and your resale value will be higher.

If you do have a ceramic coating on your car...

congratulations, you're smart and you have the best protection available.

But this doesn't give you permission to totally neglect your car during our 9 months of rainy stormy weather! Regular, simple washing is still the best defense against paint degradation, even if you have a ceramic coating. Besides, by now you know that washing a ceramic-coated car is ridiculously easy isn't it?

Why Ceramic Coating is Mandatory for Matte Satin Paint and Decals There is no denying the dramatic increase in popularity that matte finishes, satin wraps, and bold vinyl graphics have on modern automotive culture. Whether it’s a stealthy aftermarket wrap or an ultra-premium factory finish like Mercedes’ Magno series or BMW’s Frozen paint, a non-glossy surface gives a vehicle a unique and sometimes aggressive look. But buying a matte vehicle usually comes with a massive wave of immediate anxiety for the owner because they're frequently not sure of how to care for this style of paint. Should you use wax, a sealant perhaps, or an off-the-shelf DIY ceramic coating? As a professional detailer who has spent over 31 years in the trenches of preservation-focused detailing, I hear the same questions every single week at my shop in Beaverton: “How do I protect this paint? Can I ceramic coat it? And if I do, is it going to turn my beautiful matte finish into a shiny, glossy, blotchy mess?” If you are asking these questions, you are asking the right things! But there is a lot of misinformation out there. Let’s clear up the confusion once and for all. Not only can you ceramic coat matte paint and decals, but if you want to keep your vehicle looking pristine, a dedicated ceramic coating that is designed specifically for non-glossy finishes is practically mandatory. This blog post is a deep dive into why prevention is your only line of defense, the actual science of how a matte coating bonds to your car, and how we prove it doesn’t add artificial shine.
